Authorities re-impose curfew, restrictions to foil Kulgam Chalo call of separatists | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 27: Authorities re-imposed curfew in some parts of summer capital of the state here and in South Kashmir in order to foil the 'Kulgam Chalo' call given by the separatists for today. Reports said that since early morning the authorities made the announcement that curfew has been imposed in areas coming under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Kralkhud and Maisuma in the Srinagar city. Similar announcements were made in South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian. In the other parts of the Kashmir valley restrictions under Section were imposed in order to prevent the people from assembling and then move towards Kulgam district in form of processions. The continuous rainfall also made the things easy for the authorities with people preferring to remain indoors. Separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were arrested by the police as they tried to come out of their respective residences and move towards the Kulgam district. Both Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar defied the house imprisonment and move out in order to reach the Kulgam district. However, the police personnel swung into action and arrested both of them. They were lodged at Humhama and Nigeen police stations. Another separatist leader Mohammad Yasin Malik continues to be under arrest at the Kothi Bagh police station. Ever since violence broke out in Kashmir the separatist leaders have been asking to observe shutdown and carry out other forms of 'resistance'. Reports said that barring few clashes in Kulgam, Shopian and Kupwara districts the situation by and large peaceful in the valley. Two persons sustained injuries in the Cherkote area of Kupwara district after groups of youth clashed with police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). In the Srinagar city reports of clashes have come from the Khanyar area. Reports said that locals in Khonmoh staged a protest after the body of a missing youth was recovered near a factory in the industrial area. The deceased was identified as Aqib Ahmad Lone son of Muhammad Ramzan, a resident of Lone Mohalla-Khonmoh. Sources while quoting the family members of the deceased youth said that Aqib had gone missing after he offered funeral prayers of a local youth who had succumbed to his injuries a few days back in Srinagar hospital. They said that the whereabouts of the youth were not known since then. A police spokesman said that the situation throughout the Kashmir valley remained peaceful and under control today. There was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere in the valley. Apart from police Stations of old city Srinagar, Kulgam and Anantnag towns, there were no restrictions anywhere in the Kashmir valley. Meanwhile, after remaining suspended for 19 days the post-paid mobile phones of all the private cellular companies were restored since midnight yesterday. However, the mobile internet services continue to remain suspended in the valley. Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 53 persons including two policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan. |
