I&FC Deptt's ill planning endangers Sidhra-Panjtirthi stretch | Constructs bund on Tawi's left bank, overlooks right bank | | Arun Singh ET Report Jammu, July 27: Government seems to have learnt no lesson from the past flood fury which had created havoc in Jammu as well as across the State as again with the negligence of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC), another disaster like situation is looming large over the adjoining areas of Tawi River particularly portions falling between Sidhra and Panjtirthi in the ongoing monsoon. Sources told Early Times that Irrigation and Flood Control Department had carried out the construction work of protection bund along left bank of River Tawi near Sidhra bridge few years back to safeguard the adjoining areas from flash floods during rainy season but without assessing the vulnerability of the same along the right side of the river. "It made no sense that department made proposal only for protection bund on left bank of the river and overlook the same provision on right bank. Constructing bund on left bank and leaving the right bank shows the ill-planning and short sightedness of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department which is also a risk prone area," sources maintained. "Carrying out protection work only along left bank of River Tawi for training the flow of water of the river was illogical as the right bank of the river was equally vulnerable during heavy downpour," they added. Sources further said that when one travels on the road from Sidhra Bridge to Panjtirthi along right bank of river Tawi there is a certain stretch immediately downstream of the Sidhra Bridge where the water is cutting the edge of the hills. In September 2014 floods, a portion of this road got damaged due to sliding of land along the bank of the river, they informed. Consequently, Roads and Buildings Department had to reconstruct the damaged road by incurring huge expenses. "The point is that by constructing a protection bund along left bank alone has the potential of snipping the road connectivity of Sidhra township with Panjtirthi and other parts of the walled city in future. This could eventually result in huge financial implications for the R&B as well as I&FC Departments for carrying out the repair works," said sources. |
