Leadership divided over celebrations | PDP foundation Day | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 27: Even as the foundation day of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) falls on July 28, the party leadership is divided on holding celebrations of the anniversary on Thursday. Reliable sources said the party leadership last evening held a meeting with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who is also the PDP President, to decided on whether or not celebrate the foundation day of the party established on the day in 1999. Sources said while some of the senior leaders including Member Parliament Tariq Hameed Karra are unlikely to attend any such celebrations, the other lobby stressed for celebrating the foundation day. One group of leaders had been saying that it would be "unwise" to hold celebrations during the unrest while others said hosting foundation day celebrations was a must to send a "good signal." Insiders said some of the senior leaders were of the opinion that not celebrating the event would bring "Abhshagun(misfortune)". "Last year the foundation day was not celebrated to condole the demise of former President APJ Abdul Kalam while subsequently we suffered major loss in the demise of Mufti Sahib... So this year it needs to be celebrated to avoid any Abhshagun," said a PDP leader asking not to be identified. Sources said the leaders in favor of holding the event said the celebrations should be held outside the PDP head office at SK Park here. "This place(SK Park) has been lucky for us, so we will hold the celebrations here only. Otherwise also not holding the celebrations will send a wrong message when the government is trying its best to restore normalcy," said a PDP leader. Sources said it was amicably resolved that the event would commence at 12:00 PM. Besides Mehbooba, other leaders including Education Minister, Naeem Akhter, Sport Minsiter Imran Raza Ansari, MLA Altaf Bukhari, and MOS Farooq Andrabi are likely to the address the rally. It will be PDP's first rally after the unrest which erupted in Kashmir in the wake of killing of militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8 in south Kashmir. Since then the government has been struggling to restore law and order in the restive Valley. Sources said as a security measure, the police was likely to seal all the roads leading to foundation day venue and that only the PDP card holders would be allowed to enter the park. A PDP leader from old Srinagar said each of them has been asked to bring atleast "20 trusted workers" along for the function. Insiders said the event would commence with Fateha Kahwani for PDP founder and former Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, who died in office on January 7, 2016. However a PDP leader said given the "security and political concerns" a final call on holding of the event will be held Thursday morning. "But as of now the function stands confirmed to be held at the traditional venue at noon," the leader told Early Times. |
