Army appoints Lt Gen Jagbir Singh Cheema as officiating western army commander | | | Agencies CHANDIGARH, July 28: Lt Gen Jagbir Singh Cheema, general officer commanding (GOC) of Vajra Corps has been nominated as officiating general officer commanding-in-chief (GOC-in-C) of Western Command with effect from August 1, 2016. He would replace Lt Gen KJ Singh, the present GOC-in-C of western command, who will hang up his boots on July 31. High placed source in army confirmed that this is an interim arrangement till a permanent incumbent is posted. With this arrangement there will be no vacuum in the functioning of Headquarters Western Command and the chain of command will be intact, sources added. Lt Gen Jagbir Singh Cheema has been in command of the prestigious Vajra Corps since August 21, 2015. The GOC has varied and rich operational experience of counter insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir as well as North-East. Meanwhile, the outgoing western army commander, Lt Gen KJ Singh presided over a high level video conference on Thursday with the corps commanders and principal staff officers wherein the working modalities and response strategy were deliberated and finalized. He emphasized on maintaining high operational preparedness and swift response system to meet any contingency in the western theatre. He appreciated the high morale of the troops in the service of the Nation. Lt Gen KJ Singh would superannuate after a distinguished military career spanning almost four decades. |
