Karra, Beig stay away from PDP foundation day celebrations | No seat for Altaf Bukhari among senior leaders on podium | | Early Times Report srinagar, July 28: The Peoples Democratic Party yet again seems to be a "divided house" as two of the senior leaders and Members of Parliament, Muzaffar Hussain Beig and Tariq Hameed Karra stayed away from the foundation day celebrations held here Thursday. With the media having been kept away from the function, the celebrations chaired by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti were attended by around 400 PDP members including ministers, senior leaders and workers. The function was held at the PDP head office here. But Beig and Karra, as per the insiders remained conspicuous by their absence, while Mehbooba and other leaders paid glowing tributes to former Chief Minister and PDP founder, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed. Since last year the MP duo has been avoiding party functions owing to growing differences with the "inexperienced" colleagues including Education Minister Naeem Akhter and MLA Altaf Bukhari. A few months ago Karra had termed a duo as renegades who were eating into the vitals of the party like a termite eats wood. Mehbooba in her address said late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed was a visionary who never changed his stand and love for the people of Jammu and Kashmir whereas he died looking after the interests of the state. However, much against the expectations, only the party veterans were allowed to address the event, which lasted for around two hours. Those who addressed the event included ministers AR Veeri, Syed Basharat Bukhari and Irfan Ansari. Insiders said the PDP leadership didn't want any of the "controversial voices" to address the gathering and thus only "selected speakers" spoke on the occasion. Interestingly even though MLA, Amira Kadal, Syed Altaf Bukhari is seen among the senior leaders, insiders said there was no seat for him on the dais. He was seen sitting silently among the "commoners" in the Shamyana facing the podium where his other senior colleagues were seated. Some workers in the back rows, as per insiders, quipped that civil lines was denied representation even on podium. But others responded saying only ministers were sitting on the podium and so there was "no fun raising any undue issue of discrimination" over Bukhari's seat. Sources said the party had planned to hold the annual day at the SK Municipal Park, adjacent to the PDP head office on the bund but that unfavorable "intelligence inputs" prevented the party from doing so. A senior PDP leader said strict instructions were passed on to the police to allow no one except the valid PDP I-card holders inside the venue. A PDP worker complained that despite being a party loyalist he was disallowed entry as he has lost in the card in the ongoing unrest. "I told the police that I am a loyalist and love Mufti Sahib from core of my heart but police didn't listen to me and denied me entry taking me as a media person," he regretted. |
