From Dalgate to Foreshore Road, Dal water has started emanating pungent smell while weeds collected before uprising are yet to be lifted which makes movement of people difficult. ''Dal lake is already on the verge of extinction, we have not seen a single machinery in past eighteen days, even mechanical work has also been stopped, the water besides emanating pungent smell has turned red in absence of purification," said Ali Mohammad a Shikara owner. He said Dal water was once used for drinking propose while the same is considered as poison at present. He also claimed that the fishes in Dal Lake are not good to eat and people should desist from consuming fishes from this Lake whose water has now turned fatal. "It is an irony that the authorities despite having sophisticated machineries have stopped extracting weeds from Dal Lake, its water has turned Red and yellow that clearly indicates that its fishes too are not good to eat. One who wants to fall ill for long should taste the appetizing fishes of Dal Lake," he said. A senior official of Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) told 'Early Times' that machines used to extract weeds have fallen defunct while labor force assigned to clean it manually have been unseen. "The department has assigned hundreds of people form native Dal Lake for manual cleaning however they too have stopped work; it is not that they have to come from distant areas but they too are waiting normalcy to restore," he said. He claimed that workforce assigned to extract obnoxious weeds with machines is also not attending the office which has even worsened the situation. "Laborers from native Dal Lake could do the job as there was no agitation in the area but I don't know what makes them to be absent from duties," said the official. |
