Now discrimination in broadband blockade in Kashmir | BSNL gives connectivity to political leaders, workers; Journos, others denied access | | Early Times Report
srinagar, Aug 16: Now the government is resorting to alleged discrimination even in the ban on broadband internet connectivity in restive Kashmir. Even as the state government on August 14 completed the ban on internet with the closure of the broadband connections in the Valley, scores of "influential subscribers" continue to enjoy the internet connectivity on their landlines. This primarily includes the Friends Enclave Humhama, the posh colony where many of the politicians from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) led government reside. The broadband internet continues to operate in the private colony. The same holds true for selected broadband connections in Bemina, Raj Bagh, Lal Chowk and Dalgate areas. Sources in the BSNL said the government had given a "long list of connections", which need to be kept operational even during the ban. While the BSNL GMT declined to divulge details of the connections which have been kept operational, insiders said around 1000 connections are still working. "This mostly includes politicians and workers of a particular political party and their relatives," said an insider. Sources said a ruling party was cashing the ban on internet to let its party men have a field day on the social media. "Basically the game plan is to give free hand to accounts like IbneBattutta, who work for our party," said a politician asking not to be named. The apparent discrimination has drawn widespread criticism. While the lawyers have decided to move court against the discrimination, the opposition National Conference termed it a shame on the part of the government. "This is shameful that the government is stooping so low that now we have discrimination in the broadband connectivity. Discrimination in the ban on internet exposes how corrupt the PDP regime is," National Conference spokesman Imran Dar told Early Times. When contacted a senior BSNL official said the service provider was working as per the directions of the state government. "We have not done anything out of our own. We acted exactly the way the government wanted us to act," he said. |
