US for Indo-Pak talks but India for talks on terror only | | | Though Washington has reiterated its suggestion to India and Pakistan to go in for direct talks, India is yet not willing to reopen the doors for bilateral dialogue because Islamabad’s continued aid to militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir. In addition to this, New Delhi is of the firm belief that Pakistani agencies continue to fuel unrest in Kashmir which has already paralysed life for the 47th day. In fact not only Pakistan but its supporters in Kashmir, separatists, too keep on inciting people to violence. This is the reason that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, does not intend to hold talks either with the hardliners among the separatists or with Islamabad despite the fact that he has told a delegation of opposition leaders from Jammu and Kashmir that he was too keen to open the doors for dialogue and all turmoils could be resolved through talks but the situation in Kashmir is not conducive for holding talks as once New Delhi agreed to hold talks with separatists it could be a signal of India’s weakness. A direct dialogue between India and Pakistan is good for them and the region, the US has said as it voiced support to meetings at any level between the two countries. The US strongly supports all efforts between India and Pakistan that can contribute to a more stable and prosperous region, and that includes meetings at any level between Indian and Pakistani officials. Washington’s longstanding position has always been that India and Pakistan stand to benefit from a normalisation of relations and practical cooperation, and so the US would be encouraged that India and Pakistan continue to engage in direct dialogue aimed at reducing tensions. The State Department’s statement came days after India rejected Pakistan’s proposal to hold Foreign Secretary-level talks on Kashmir and asserted that it would like to discuss aspects related to cross-border terrorism which are central to the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Whatever may be the provocation from Pakistan and separatists New Delhi will have to think twice before reopening the channels of dialogue because both Pakistan and the separatists have complicated the Kashmir issue.Pakistan has complicated the issue by exporting terror to Jammu and Kashmir and the separatists have compounded the problem by giving repeated calls for shutdown and protest rallies which are the root cause of clashes between the security forces and the protesters. And during the last 47 days more than 70 people have been killed and several thousand people, including over 3,000 security personnel, have been injured. It is in this situation India finds it difficult to go in for talks either with Pakistan or with separatists. If India was to be motivated to hold talks Pakistan should stop exporting terror to India, including Jammu and Kashmir, and separatists need to stop inciting people to violence. These are two simple demands and let Pakistan and separatists accept it. |
