Death toll in Kashmir violence reaches 69 as Pulwama teenager gets killed in forces action | 17 police, CRPF personnel injured in grenade attack near Degree College, Pulwama | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 24: The death toll in the continuing Kashmir violence reached 69 today as a teenager was killed in the firing of forces in a village in South Kashmir's Pulwama district. Dozens of persons were injured in clashes at some other places in the valley. At the same time 17 police and CRPF personnel sustained injuries when militants lobbed a grenade towards them near Degree College, Pulwama. The incident occurred when the protests were going on in the area. Reports said that at least eight persons' sustained injuries after forces opened fire on a group of protesters at Pinglena in Pulwama district in the morning. Clashes broke out in the area after police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel intercepted a group of people who were heading towards the Prichoo village. As the protesters were marching towards Prichoo to organize a rally the forces used force against them in order to stop them in moving ahead. Police and CRPF opened fire and resorted to pellet firing in order to break the procession. As a result of the forces action, eight persons sustained injuries. Some of the injured were shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital in Srinagar. One of the injured succumbed to his injuries at the SMHS hospital. He was identified as 18 years old Aamir Gul Mir, resident of Ratnipora. Following Aamir's death protests broke out in many villages of Pulwama district. In the evening more than 20 persons got injured in clashes when people from various areas including Karimabad and Newa tried to move towards Prichoo while a police party was stationed near Degree College Pulwama. The group of people clashed with the police personnel and in the melee around two dozen persons got injured. Condition of one of the injured is stated to be critical. In the Srinagar district protests broke out in the Safa Kadal, Noorbagh and adjacent areas after a CRPF personal hit a trio who were on a motorcycle. The three persons' sustained injuries in the incident with the condition of one among stated to be critical at the SMHS hospital. Following this incident, groups of agitated youth pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel with the same being retaliated by lobbing of smoke shells. Clashes broke out in the Narbal area of Central Kashmir's Budgam in the evening. Reports said that around 30 persons sustained minor injuries during the clashes. The injured were shifted to local hospital with some of them referred to Srinagar. Clashes also broke out in the Beehama area of Ganderbal district. Some of the protesters mostly comprising of women sustained minor injuries during this incident. Clashes have also been reported from some other areas of Kashmir valley. A statement issued by Zonal Police Headquarters, Kashmir said that eight incidents of stone pelting were reported from Pulwama, Budgam, Srinagar, Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora today. "At Pinglena, Pulwama miscreants assembled on road and started heavy stone pelting on the police and SF deployment. In order to clear the road and chase the miscreants, Police/Security forces were compelled to use some force, which caused injuries to few miscreants. One of them identified as Amir Gul Mir son of Ghulam Mohammad Mir resident of Ratnipora succumbed to his injuries. In this incident a number of police and security forces personnel were also injured," the statement said. The statement said that except for these incidents, overall situation across the valley remained under control. Apart from some police stations of Srinagar and Anantnag town there was increased movement of traffic on roads in rest of the valley, the statement added. The statement said that during stone pelting near Degree College Pulwama, militants hiding in the mob fired and hurled two grenades on the deployment resulting in injuries to 17 police and CRPF personnel and some civilians. The injured include CO 183 BN CRPF, ASP Pulwama, DySP Pulwama and SHO Pulwama. |
