Heavy green felling in Kulgam woods during curfew, strikes | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times report
Kulgam, Aug 25: Taking advantage of the more than a month-long curfew and strikes in the valley, timber smugglers are alleged to have indulged in ruthless felling of green trees in Kulgam forests of Kashmir. While the state machinery was busy in dealing with the Kashmir situation, some timber smugglers got busy in felling green trees in Humpathri Danew Kandimarg area of Kulgam forests, police sources alleged. "Maximum number of green trees are felled in compartment Nos 16 and 18," sources alleged. Taking cognizance of the alleged green loot, Kulgam police have registered an FIR against the smugglers and constituted a special team to bust the mafia. "We have seized thousands of sft of timber and firewood in the last one week," Kulgam SSP Mohammad Irshad had Tuesday told a press conference. He said police had arrested three notorious smugglers alleged to be responsible for the green loot in the area and assured stringent action against all those involved in this illegal act. Kulgam DFO Himayu Qadri, however, contested the police claim and termed it a conspiracy. "All the timber, which police claim to have seized, is genuine and have been allotted to poor people under the Kashmir notice provision," he said. |
