High voltage drama at Rajnath's press conference | | | Early Times report
Srinagar, Aug 25: Home Minister, Rajnath Singh's press conference here Thursday turned into a high voltage drama when some journalists equated Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti with her predecessor, Omar Abdullah saying she has gone for a "role swap" and that 2010 was being repeated. Rajnath was throwing light upon New Delhi's approach to restore peace in Kashmir, when Mehbooba abruptly called off the press conference. Mehbooba, who was hosting the press conference at her Fairview residence on Gupkar was infuriated when a journalist accused her of "swapping roles and views with her predecessor Omar Abdullah on the protests." But Mehbooba reacted sharply. "Don't mix or compare the two situations. In 2010 there was a fake encounter. Today three militants were killed, how is the government to be blamed?" she reacted. Breaking her silence she said those killed in action by government forces during the ongoing unrest were not resorting to any child play. "Had a kid gone to buy a toffee from an army camp? A 15-year-old boy who attacked a police station, had he gone to buy milk? Don't compare the two," Mehbooba said. She reiterated that only 5 percent of the people were resorting to protests and that the other 95 % population was against violence. Though within moments the duo left the venue, Rajnath spoke to some media persons who rushed to him. The journalist apprised him that there was no media center to communicate with the journalist and blamed government spokesman Naeem Akhter for his chronic silence. The Home Minister said the matter would be looked into on priority. Earlier, in his address Rajnath indicated government's willingness to talk to everyone and also said an alternative to pellet guns, which have caused massive injuries among protesters, was on the cards. But as the press conference was on Mehbooba got furious. Initially, Rajnath was seen smiling and trying to pacify her. But while Mehbooba got up from her chair, within moments, the Home minister followed the Chief Minister as they left the venue. |
