People raise banner of revolt, separatists in fix | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 30: Situation in restive Kashmir, on boil since July 8, finally started to improve on Tuesday as curfew was lifted from across the Valley, barring two police stations in the summer capital of Srinagar, police and reports said. Pulwama, which continued to be the only district under curfew, got a breather on Tuesday morning. Though later in the day clashes were reported from some areas of the Valley, the intensity was low. While at some places force had to be used to disperse the protesters, elsewhere they dispersed off peacefully, the reports said. According to a police handout, curfew has been lifted from whole of the Kashmir except two Police Stations of Nowhatta and M R Gunj in the downtown of Srinagar. "Greater movement of private, passenger vehicular traffic and people was observed in major areas of the Valley including Srinagar city today," the police handout said. It said barring few minor stone pelting incidents, the overall situation remained peaceful and under control throughout the Valley till filing of this report. "The stone pelting incidents were reported from Batamaloo and Bagh-e-Mehtab in Srinagar, Chankipora and Main Chowk, Sopore, Mehmoodabad in Dooru and Kaloosa in Bandipora where miscreants in their attempts to disturb the situation pelted stones on police and security force deployments," the statement said. Meanwhile later in the day clashes erupted in Batamaloo area after government forces tried to stop a anti-India procession. The exchange of stones and tear-smoke shells created panic in the area while more than a dozen people were wounded in these clashes, witnesses said. Stone-pelting incidents were also reported from Chanapora and Kaksarai areas of the City where police used tear-gas shells to disperse the protesters. Reports said that clashes broke out on early Tuesday morning in Bandipora town between people and government forces. Police used tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesters. Protests were held in Ajas and Saderkoot Payeen areas of the district. Reports from Apple town of Sopore said some people took out protests in the area only to be chased away by police. Some women in north Kashmir's Palhallan took out a rally. At least twenty protesters were injured in south Kashmir after forces resorted to tear gas shelling in Qazigund and Watho areas of Kulgam and Shopian districts respectively. Clashes broke out in Frestabal Pampore area of Pulwam district where youth attacked government forces with stones. |
