Vajpayee's Insaniyat-Jamhooriyat-Kashmiriyat will not work, says Baig | 'Kashmiri want their own state' | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 30: PDP's ideologue and Member of Lok Sabha and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig is one Kashmiri leader who has spoken the truth and rejected the suggestion that the application of Vajpayee's Insaniyat-Jamhooriyat-Kashmiriyat lice could end unrest in the Valley and resolve the Kashmir issue. He has said things in the Valley and attitude of Kashmiris especially youth, have completely changed their struggle is more religious in character and implications than political and that they want their own independent state. Asserting that there have been three preceding stages of the conflict, Baig has said: "This, the fourth stage in the struggle of Kashmir, is in danger of becoming religious extremism, which is not a political goal but a religious vision; Kashmiris must have their own state and they cannot live in a Hindu state". He has added that "the conflict, which arose out of the 'direct legacy' of partition and Mohammad Ali Jinnah's two-nation theory, has changed for the worse". "Although terrorism hit Kashmir in 1990, when thousands of Kashmiri Muslims and hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits were massacred, it was still a part of the local struggle," he has further stressed. "It was not a part of a world vision for the revival of Khilafat (the movement for an `Islamic state') and hegemony of religious extremism. Now, there's a danger of it becoming a part of the international struggle," he has further said. "Violence in Kashmir, he has asserted "will be magnified from now on". Baig, who is known for doing plain-speaking on occasions, has not stopped just there. He has further said: "Until now, the older and rural population voted in Kashmir. Now, that may be in danger because this new uprising has gone into rural Kashmir. It appears religious extremism is infecting the hearts and minds of youths…Even women are participating in the struggle, not in a big way, but since the excessive use of force and pellet guns, they've started coming to the centre stage". As for the solution to the problem, Baig has said: "A political resolution to Kashmir was not possible until a dialogue between India and Pakistan on a higher level -and with Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh leaders on a local level-was held". Each and every word that Baig has spoken is self-explanatory and it suggests that Kashmiris this time are not fighting for autonomy or self-rule within India; they are fighting for a bigger thing: Separate state. In other words, Baig has said that it is a religious struggle going on in Kashmir and only some supernatural force alone can help to calm down the protesting Kashmiris . The problem is that the Indian political class is not prepared to endorse what Baig has said. That's the reason New Delhi has failed to tackle the situation. New Delhi would do well to appreciate the Baig's diagnosis and prescribe medicine accordingly. |
