Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 30: Eight years on, Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti has been observing a ritualistic programme every year on August 28, all to pay tributes to the martyrs of 2008 land agitation besides felicitating their families by way of token gestures. This year's programme at Geeta Bhawan saw same customary practices in a formal , rather ritualistic manner raising many questions as why the Samiti leaders do not move a step beyond in extending any financial help to the families, mostly having weak economic conditions.
Sources said even though the leaders of Sangharsh Samiti organized a programme this year in which tributes were paid to those who laid down lives in the agitation for the cause Jammu took up in 2008, the felicitations looked more like insulting instead of any genuine honour bestowed to the family members. All these years the Samiti has been remembering the martyrs by paying tributes to them, but in the name of felicitations it has been giving the family members a simple shawl. This may be well a token of respect but it hardly matters to majority of the families who lost their bread earners in the agitation, sources said adding that the explicit inference pointed out by many at the function was at poor economic conditions of the families which needed some financial help.
Sources said in the year 2008 when the agitation spearheaded by the Sangharsh Samiti reached its peak with massive public response, the Samiti had received donations, implying it has a substantial amount of money in its kitty. It has not misappropriated any funds but the leaders have not utilized that money for any good cause either, said the sources. In the wake of the fact that most of the families are poor and need financial support, the Samiti could have doled this money out to them on a regular basis rather than performing any ritualistic practices , sources said as the sentiment prevailing among some people gathered in the function. Moreover, the Samiti which received thorough support from BJP in the Amarnath land agitation has yet not been able to get the cases slapped on many people from Jammu withdrawn even after over one and a half years of BJP in power. Nor has it been able to effectively persuade the government or the quarters that matter in granting compensation to those who suffered massive losses during the course of 63 days long agitation in Jammu.
