Anganwari centers have no toilets

Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 30: The tall claims of the State Government about sanitation campaign through the medium of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan doesn't seem to have any impact on the State Rural Development Department which has utterly failed to complete the task of providing toilet facilities in the Anganwari centers across the State as only 13% centers have been covered so far leaving rest of the centers without this facilities.
Sources told Early Times that Anganwari centers have been opened by the Government to instill a sense of hygiene among the children and for that baby friendly toilets, required to be provided in each Anganwari centre to encourage practice of using a toilet in children from a very early stage, had not been constructed in many districts.
The main objective was also to give children the environment so that they grow healthy but it looks ridiculous that the importance of Anganwaricenters has been undermined by the Department by maintaining a dismal condition of Anganwari centers craving for full fledged hygienic environment, they said.
"The progress in construction of toilets in Anganwari centers against the targets fixed at the State level was dismal, as against a target of 2024 toilets only 270 toilets had been constructed in the State during last five years which reflects that the department is not serious to improve the infrastructure facilities in centers which is the basic requirement to provide healthy atmosphere," sources said adding that the children from the far flung rural areas often come in the centers and it is very essential a well built system in the centers so as to attract more numbers of the children for their betterment and good future. They further maintained that in five districts only 191 Anganwadi toilets had been constructed against 998 toilets targeted during the period 2010-15 resulting in shortfall of 807 only 81 per cent toilets.
