Asian Chess C'ship begins in Jammu tomorrow, Pakistan not participating | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 31: Over 400 chess players and officials representing SAARC nations will be taking part in a week long South Asian Amateur Chess Championship starting here tomorrow. ''More than 400 players including officials and coaches from SAARC Countries and 40 players from J&K state have confirmed their participation,'' Atul Kumar Gupta, President All J&K Chess Association here told . Mr Gupta said Pakistan has not confirmed its participation and there are bleak chances of their participation. "Reportedly due to non issuance of the NOC by the Pakistan Government to the chess team is the reason that they are not coming to participate," said Mr Gupta. He further said that earlier the mega event was scheduled to be held at Srinagar from September 1 to 6 but due to prevailing scenario, it has been shifted to Jammu and will be held as per schedule. ''Now the event will be held at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Channi Himmat, Bye Pass Road, Jammu,'' he added. ''Pakistan team has not yet confirmed their participation in the event but Players from Nepal and Bangladesh have arrived,'' he added. The official said that more than 400 players including officials and coaches from SAARC Countries and participants from 28 states of India have reached Jammu to take part in the competition, adding, ''most of the players will be from India as Indian players have got wonderful opportunity to play an Official International event at home turf''. The host said cash prize of Rs 10 lakh will be distributed among the winners. He said that the players from Jammu and Kashmir will have exposure by participating in this championship, adding, ''the event will be organised by "All J&K Chess Association" on behalf of AICF under the banner of Asian chess Federation''. The event is a recognised official International event by World chess federation (FIDE) while Mr Srivatsan from Chennai has been appointed by Asian Federation as chief arbiter and he will be assisted by 11 of his deputies.MoS Sports Sunil Sharma will inaugurate the event tomorrow afternoon. |
