srinagar, Aug 31: The government has threatened that it would not release salaries of those employees who do not report to their duties, but it hasn't spoken a word about the legislators who continue to remain in hibernation, hence adding to people's woes.
The questions here continue to mount as when the government is stopping the salaries of its employees who haven't reported to their duties during the unrest period which started on July 9, what is barring the authorities from adopting the same yardstick for the legislators who too have been enjoying time in their fortified bungalows and not attending the people who have elected them.
There are scores of areas in Kashmir valley wherein people have been facing acute water scarcity besides other day to day issues. Though, amid the unrest, the people have made repeated pleas to their respective legislators to address their grievances, the legislators in return have cited security concerns, making it clear that they can't help them at all.
There are several hamlets of north and south Kashmir wherefrom people have complained about their MLAs missing on ground. "We have been asking our MLA about the water scarcity in our area. He hasn't done anything. He, otherwise, is duty bound, to listen to our woes but that isn't happening at al. I mean if not moving outside, he could have easily telephoned the concerned office to resolve the issue. He didn't," says Farooq Ahmad, a local resident of North Kashmir.
Farooq isn't alone while narrating the ordeal of such nature. There are thousands like him hailing from different towns and villages who haven't seen their concerned MLAs since the past two months.
Meanwhile, the question that is making rounds within the public circles is that how come the legislators who have remained absent from ground would be entitled to get the salary. "If employees are asked to report to their duties despite such simmering tensions, why the legislators who have full proof security are reluctant to address the peoples' problems. There must not be two yard sticks," says Zahoor Ahmad, a state government employee.
Pertinently, the legislators here got a 100 per cent hike in salary and allowances and draw Rs 1.60 lakh per month after the Assembly cleared a bill to double their pay and allowances last month- putting additional burden of rupees 12 crore to the state exchequer every month.
The social media here too remained abuzz about the issue of why not to stop the salary of Kashmir legislators who haven't done anything for the people during the past two months. "We know there are security concerns but this is also true that MLA can atleast meet delegations from his/ her area. The fact is that most of the Kashmir based legislators are in Delhi, Mumbai and other Indian states," says Aseef Zargar, a netizen.
Earlier, the authorities issued an order asking its employees to report to their respective places of posting failing which salary of the month of August shall not be disbursed in their favour.
