Clampdown on mobile services, curfew to be imposed | Govt fears violence on Eid | | Saqib Junaid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 10: Fearing large scale violence in Kashmir on eid , the government has decided to impose curfew and clampdown on the mobile services on Tuesday when the festival is scheduled to be celebrated. Sources said the government has directed officers (police, paramilitary) not to leave the headquarters, without the prior permission of the designated authorities. This step according to sources has been taken to keep proper vigil on the situation. The authorities had a bitter experience in the past, when protests broke out in several parts of Kashmir valley on Eid occasions, prompting authorities to impose restrictions. The government has decided to impose curfew on September 13 after the separatists called for a protest march to the United Nations office in Srinagar that day. Sources said the government has directed the police, intelligence agencies, central security forces and district civil administration officers to be available at their district headquarters to monitor the situation on Eid. "There are intelligence inputs that intense protests may break out if restrictions are not imposed on Eid and some people may take advantage if there are relaxations from the government," a senior police official said on Saturday. However, he said adequate security arrangements will be made across the across the state to avoid repetition of such incidents like happened in the past when clashes broke out on Eid-ul-Fitr. The official said as per contingency measures, more central armed police force personnel were being rushed to the Valley. As per the Home Ministry's data, 1,732 incidents have been reported in the valley from July 8-September 6. "This is not the first time that Section 144 has been imposed on any festival in the Kashmir valley. It is necessary as separatists have given call for a protest march and we don't want people to come out on roads and violence to escalate," said the official. He said the mobile services will also be blocked and the government was considering to stop Broadband services in the Valley on that day in view of escalating crisis. "If violence starts on Eid that it will be a challenging job for the security forces to control the situation," he added.'' |
