Despite adequate funds for macadamization, Jammu roads in shambles | | | Vinod Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 10: The dilapidated roads in Jammu city can be attributed to the lethargy of Public Works Department (PWD) that despite availability of sufficient funds for macdamization of roads of Jammu, the department has failed to do the work, for which funds are sanctioned by government. Most of Jammu roads are full of potholes after the rainy season, some of which are presently filled with mixture of sand and bazri while remaining are still in worst condition, creating problems for the vehicle owners and bikers. "During rains, potholes get filled with water creating problems for commuters besides these potholes also led to accidents", Rajkumar a shopkeeper of Gummat area said. He further said that few hundred meters stretch of road from Gummat Petrol Pump to Dogra chowk was enough to expose the department. "The road is in heart of the city and is full of potholes, which are filled with mixture of sand and bazri few days back", he said, adding that it was also obvious that roads would be macadamized soon as annual darbar is scheduled to move Jammu after one months. "We have a simple question with the department as whether the Jammuites are not citizen of state. Why only the department wake up from slumber, whenever power corridors move to Jammu city and forget this city whenever secretariat move to valley", Rajinder Singh of Panjthirthi said. Criticizing the government, the shopkeepers said that on one hand government claimed to promote tourism sector in Jammu province but failure of government to provide basic infrastructure including roads was enough to expose the government claims. An executive engineer of PWD department said that the macdamization of roads was going on. "During rains, we refrain from doing macdamization work and now the work has been started. One by one all the roads will be macadamized", he said, adding that the plan approved by government for Jammu province roads, was not sanctioned by the government, which was also a hurdle. An official of PWD department in civil secretariat said that funds for macdamization were available in abundance. "A total of Rs. 200 Crores are approved for macdamization of Jammu roads out of which nearly Rs. 60 Crores has been released. Another amount of Rs. 50 Crores is approved under cities and towns component, which is to be released for Jammu roads", he said, adding that there was no shortage of funds for macdamization but the department officials were unable to utilize the funds properly. |
