No festivity ahead of Eid in Kashmir | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 10: There seems no festivity or enthusiasm ahead of upcoming Eid-ul-Azha in Kashmir as continuous curfew coupled with internet gag and shutdowns has left people in pensive mood. Major marketplaces like Lal Chowk, Jamia Masjid present a deserted look while suburban's and uptown localities in summer capital Srinagar depict the same picture. Pertinently with the killing of two more civilians in Kashmir today the toll mounts to seventy eight on sixty fifth day of the unrest. Children seem to be terrified while elders living an uneasy life in the wake of ongoing unrest that erupted in the aftermath of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani on July 8. Bakers who otherwise do brisk business on festivals like Eid-ul-Fitr and Azha could not prepare bakery while confectioners also barred to prepare tasty confectionery on this festival. Roads like trendy Boulevard Road where shepherds used to sell sacrificial animals to people has also witnessed steep decline this year as the people seems least interested to buy animals for sacrificial purpose on Eid. "Give me a single reason as to why should celebrate eid, bodies of those who were killed during past more than two months are still fresh in graves, continuous curfew restrictions and shutdowns has made people to believe that no one seems to be concerned about their plight," Ashiq Hussain a local told 'Early Times'. He said that the people of Kashmir have been witnessing difficulties since more than two decades and there seems no end to these crises. "People of Kashmir witnessed worst ever floods in 2014 that wrecked havoc far and wide but people still celebrated eid and made purchases, but it is very difficult to manage the same courage this year," he added. Perhaps unwilling of what is happening around, a five year old girl during relaxation hours on Friday evening weeping asking her father to get fresh cloths for her on eid, however the helpless father could not fulfill her demand who in feeble voice told her that he left his valet at home. "Yes she is asking me to get fresh clothes for her, I am a street vendor selling used shoes in Lal Chowk, I am at home since two months how could I buy clothes for her," said Ramzan a street vendor. He said that he has never missed a single chance to make his family happy but this year he could not give anything to them except for tears and hunger. |
