Rajauri, Sept 11: Even as the people continue to suffer due to presence of vegetable mandi at a congested place in Sunderbani here, the government has been delaying the relocation of the market to new location where shops have already been allotted to traders.
The old mandi had been operational here for the past over four decades. But the presence of the Mandi at the crowded location has been a cause of inconvenience, particularly for those heading to hospital.
Officials confirmed that the areas has become accident-prone and that ambulances get stuck in the traffic jams on this route, while many patients died due to delay in reaching hospital.
Officials said in the wake of inconvenience to the people, some years back the government decided to shift the mandi to a new location where 22 shops and a huge shed were constructed by the municipal committee and space was subsequently allotted to some shopkeepers.
In 2013, after inviting bids, the shops were sold for around Rs 3 crores as each shopkeeper paid over Rs 10-12 lakh to the municipal committee.
But even though the shops were sold, the new mandi was not made operational. As a result the shopkeepers who purchased the space are in trouble.
"We borrowed loan heavily from the banks and have landed in heavy debts as the government is unwilling to shift the market here," said a delegation of the affected shopkeepers including Raju Sharma, Ashok Kumar, Rajesh Jamwal, Ashish Prasar, Nitu Prasar and Raesh Kumar.
Sources said some politicians who have stakes in the old mandi in league with municipal committee have been sabotaging its relocation.
Area respectable hold the same opinion. "For the last three years people suffer because some BJP leaders and government officials have been hindering the much needed relocation of the mandi. This is injustice," said Manoj Kumar, the City President.
When contacted the Director Urban Local Bodies Jammu, Soujanya Sharma said the matter has come to his notice.
"I have issued the directions and the mandi will be shifted to new place within three four days," the official said.
