KUPWARA, Sept 11: Security forces foiled multiple infiltration attempts at several places along LoC in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions, with four militants eliminated in Nowgam and three in Poonch. A police constable was also martyred in Poonch encounter.
Four foreign militants were killed while they were attempting to infiltrate near LoC in Nowgam sector of Handwara in Kupwara district, while army foiled infiltration bids in Tangdar and Gurez sectors of north Kashmir.
A top police official told Early Times, "today morning, suspicious movement was noticed by the vigilant troops near the fencing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector. The intruders were challenged which led to a gunfight between the militants and security forces".
"The Army had got specific inputs on Saturday night about the movement of militants in dense forests and today morning they intercepted a group of 4-5 heavily armed militants near the Line of Control in Nowgam sector", the official said.
He said that the ultras were told to surrender but there was an indiscriminate firing from their end which triggered a gun battle in which four militants were neutralized. Army has launched search operation in the dense forests near LoC till the last reports came in.
The official added that the identification of the killed militants has not been ascertained yet, but the cache of arms and ammunition have been recovered from the site of encounter.
Srinagar based defence spokesperson Col N N Joshi told early Times that four militants were killed in an encounter today near LoC in Nowgam sector. "Infiltration attempt was foiled by vigilant troops and army has also recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition like 4 AK-47 rifles, magazines, hand grenades, wire cutters and other war like store from the site of encounter" the defence spokesperson confirmed.

Police sources said three to four militants sneaked from across the Line of Control into Poonch town and attacked Rajinder Kumar alias Raju, a havildar in the Special Branch of CID with Poonch Police, when he spotted them trying to enter an old bungalow.
They opened fire on Raju and killed him instantly. One of the militants then fled into an under-construction mini-secretariat building surrounded by maize fields while the other took refuge in a school, sources said.
Poonch deputy commissioner MH Malik said the gun battle was still on. Sources said the army's elite para commandos were airlifted from Udhampur to launch a final assault.
