Cong, NC, CPI-M, BJP separatists on same page | Unrest in Valley | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 11: The political scene of the Valley has undergone a radical change. The situation has reached a point where it has become difficult to distinguish between the separatist organizations and "mainstream" political parties, including the Congress, the NC, the CPI-M, and even the PDP, the ruling party. The statements being issued by the separatists and leaders of the Congress, the NC, the CPI-M and the PDP are identical and it appears that the Congress, the NC and the CPI-M have become the mouthpieces of the Hurriyat Conference and Pakistan. This is a statement of fact. The NC, which till not so-long-ago used to talk about autonomy or pre-1953 position, now says this solution will not work. It says the people of Kashmir want something "bigger"; something beyond pre-1953 position. Not just this, the NC, like separatists, now says Pakistan is also a stakeholder in J&K. Working president of the NC Omar Abdullah has even gone to the extent of suggesting that the Kashmiri boys want to pick up gun but their problem is that there is dearth of guns. He made this dangerous statement through twitter.com. The Congress, which till the other day used to claim that it was a national party, today doesn't talk about the 1975 Indira Gandhi-Sheikh Abdullah Accord. It wants New Delhi to endorse former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf's four-point formula as well as implementation of the so-called 1952 Delhi Agreement. (There is no agreement as the Delhi Agreement.) The statements being issued or made by Ghulam Nabi Azad, Saif-ud-Din Soz and Ghulam Ahmad Mir leave none in any doubt that they have turned radicals. CPI-M leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has also been echoing similar views. As for the PDP, its leaders like Mehboob Beg have been openly appealing to the Huriyat leadership to allow the PDP to rule the state, saying the state government has been trying to achieve a solution to the Kashmir issue and that the PDP knows what the Hurriyat leaders vouch for. On the other hand, PDP PM Muzaffar Baig has virtually confronted New Delhi with a choice between implementation of the PDP-BJP agenda of alliance and dissolution of the J&K assembly. More significantly, the BJP has also jumped on the separatists' bandwagon. The September 10 New Delhi statement of BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav that there were no differences with the PDP only indicated the direction the BJP was moving towards. The fact of the matter is that the so-called mainstream parties have instead of taking on the separatists virtually jumped on to their bandwagon. The result is widespread dissatisfaction among the nationalists in the state. The worst part of the whole situation is the overt and covert support the separatists are getting from New Delhi. If the situation continues like this for some more time, there would be disturbances in Jammu and Ladakh as well. In fact, the people of these two regions are already seething with anger and what shape this anger could take anytime from now is not difficult to anticipate considering the Jammu's past history of protests and nationalist interventions. |
