NSF demands audit to ascertain utility of laptops in JU | | | Early Times Report
Jammu Sept 11 : The University of Jammu (JU) has spent a whopping sum of Rs 1.6 crore on purchase of computers and laptops whereas no accountability has been fixed on the officials who have utilized the same for their personal and family use rather than using them for research work. More so, the University is yet to recover the laptops from the former top officials (including Vice Chancellor) which had been issued to them in various capacities. Addressing a press conference here, National Secular Forum (NSF) State President Dr.Vikas Sharma disclosed the data related to the expenditure made by University during the last ten years which he got through RTI reply. Dr.Vikas Sharma revealed that University spent a whopping sum of Rs 1.24 crore on the purchase of computers and Rs 36 lakh on laptops during the period 2005-15. "A total of 146 laptops have been issued to various officials so far. Out of those only 22 were returned by the officials whereas rest still used. And, surprisingly, many former University top officials failed to return the laptops even after leaving the University long ago," Sharma said. He further mentioned that among the former top officials who didn't return the laptops include a Vice Chancellor, Controller Examination, Director DDE and twelve others whereas, University authorities didn't also bother to ask for the laptops hence plundering the University exchequer. Dr.Vikas Sharma alleged that laptops and computers were issued to the officials and teachers on pick and chooses policy. "The pick and choose policy can be gauged from the fact that laptops and computers were issued to several lower rung officials as well. Further, no accountability has been maintained vis-à-vis use of the laptops and computers by the officials," he alleged. He maintained that University teachers and officials were using the laptops and computers for their personal use. "It is pathetic to learn that laptops that have been returned are condemned and of no further use. It is also condemnable that University failed to take back laptops from the ex-officials causing loss to the University exchequer.Dr.Vikas Sharma demanded from the University authorities to disclose the name of all those who have not returned laptops and also impose penalty on them. He also called for audit to check the productivity of the laptops and computers usage by the officials/ teachers.Among those who were present in the press-conference included, Papinder Singh, Narinder Singh, and Rishikesh Rana. |
