Angry Jammu, insensitive BJP | No ex-gratia to Uri martyrs | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 27: Jammu is turning more and more angry with the BJP with each day. Many social and political groups have taken the refusal of the state government to announce ex-gratia for the families of the Uri martyrs - Ravi Paul and Karnail Singh - to mean a manifestation of the BJP's insensitivity and also its double and triple-speak. Not just social and political groups, the common people too have taken a serious exception to the official apathy towards the Jammu martyrs and the bereaved families. Most importantly, the political and social groups and the general populace are not directing their anger towards the PDP; they are directing their anger towards the BJP and for right reasons. The people of Jammu had not given the mandate to the Kashmir-based PDP; they had given the mandate to the BJP, which had held out numerous promises and assured and reassured the people that it would do this and it would do that if it got the mandate. The BJP had also held out promises to the army and the ex-soldiers. Today, this correspondent met with many serving Army officers and ex-soldiers to know what they thought about the government's indifferent attitude towards the Uri martyrs. The conversation was heartrending. What the army officers and ex-soldiers said moved this correspondent. One Army officer of the rank of Colonel, denounced the official apathy and bemoaned the delay in the announcement of ex-gratia. He is commanding a unit in J&K. He said: "It is very disheartening why martyrs of our state (J&K) are treated like this". This correspondent is not disclosing the name of the said Army officer for obvious reasons. He was not the only one who denounced the official apathy. Almost all those whom this correspondent met said almost the same thing. This is the attitude of the serving and ex-army officers towards the government. It is shocking. Chankya had once said the nations which ignore the army are destined to be doomed. Will the BJP Government at the Centre invoke Chankya and show respect toward the martyrs? It must failing which the people of the country will punish it. |
