Heavy shelling on LoC in Rajouri, Poonch, Jammu; families migrate | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 4: Pakistan resorted to heavy unprovoked firing from across the border on the Line of Control in Jammu, Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Hundreds of families have migrated to safer places, in view of fresh firing this evening on the borders. ''Border shelling is still continuing in Platan, Gigdyal, Channi Damanu and Chapeyal villages of Pallanwala Sector in Jammu district,'' Simrandeep Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu here said. He said so far, no loss of life and damage to property was reported. Meanwhile, reports from Rajouri and Poonch districts said as many as 14 families consisting of around 100 people this evening reached migrant camps at Sunderbani from forward Kalai Mora village after heavy shelling, police sources here said. They said Pakistan started targeting the forward posts and the villages this evening in Nowshera and Sunderbani areas, adding, ''over 20 families also shifted from Kalsian village.'' Meanwhile, firing also started in Balnoi sector in Poonch at around 1900 hrs and it was still continue. ''Pakistan started with small arms but later resorted to mortars and automatics,'' they added and said in some of the areas of Rajouri and Poonch belts, evacuation of families was not possible due to heavy shelling. Earlier in the afternoon, Pakistan resorted to heavy unprovoked firing in Nowsera and Pallanwala Sectors forcing border residents to migrate to safer destinations. ''Heavy firing started at around 1345 hrs in Pallanwala Sector here,'' a senior police officer here said. He said first the small arms were fired but later 70 mm and 120 mm mortars were also fired by the Pakistan, which targeted the forward posts and the villages close to border. ''Army is retaliating effectively with similar calibre weapons,'' he said adding that people have migrate to safe location set up by the district administration. No injury or causality has been reported in exchange of fire so far and the firing is on. Around 50,000 people from 45 bordering villages in Akhnoor, Pallanwala and Chhamb sectors have migrated to safer locations besides the relief camps set up by the district administration having all basic facilities. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Jammu has said around 15 schools have been designated as relief camps in the bordering belts of Jammu to give shelter to the dwellers migrating during the cross border firing. In early morning today, Pakistan violated the truce and fired unprovoked on the Line of Control in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district. ''Pakistan fired unprovoked in Nowshera Sector at three locations this morning from 0500 hrs,'' defence spokesman here said. He said Pakistan used small arms, automatics and mortars, adding, "own troops appropriately responded with similar calibre while no casualties or injuries reported till last reports came in." At least five civilians including three women got injured as Pakistan resorted to heavy unprovoked firing while over a dozen shops gutted due to fire broke out of the shelling yesterday on the Line of Control in Poonch district. However, 72 safe locations have been identified in Rajouri district to shift border dwellers during firing. RECENT CEASEFIRE VIOLATIONS On October 2, Pakistan resorted to firing and shelling from 19:15 hours along LoC in forward areas in Pallanwala belt of Jammu district. On October 1, Pakistani troops had shelled Indian posts and civilian areas with mortar bombs, RPGS and HMGS, amid small arms firing along LoC. On September 30, Pakistani troops had opened fire from small arms along the LoC in Pallanwala, Chaprial and Samnam areas of Akhnoor sector of Jammu district. On September 29, Pakistan troops had resorted to firing in Balnoie area of Mendhar sector, The Pakistani troops had violated the ceasefire on September 28 by opening fire on Indian army posts along LoC in Sabzian area Poonch sector. On September 6, Pakistani troops had fired on Army posts along the LoC in Pooch sector. Pakistani troops had also violated the ceasefire on September 2 by firing on forward army posts along the LoC in Akhnoor sector of Jammu district. Last year, 16 civilians were killed and 71 others injured in 405 incidents of cross-border firing by Pakistan.
