Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 4: A year since five workers of a political party who attempted to rape a woman in Rajouri district, the accused continue to move around freely while the victim and her family are being victimized by the authorities.
In October last year, Nancy (name changed), of Lamberi village of Nowshehra tehsil, had visited an adjoining area for some work, where she was abducted by five vehicle-borne men who attempted to rape her.
But luck favored the middle aged woman, who managed to flee from "clutches of the beasts" and rushed straight to police station Rajouri.
As per her husband, she complained before the police that the activists of a political party attempted to rape her. Though the police subsequently filed a case vide FIR number 524/2015 of 2015, to the shock of the victim and her family the police registered a case of eve-teasing, a not so serious offence.
"The case was filed sections vide 354/147 of RPC on 21-10-2015 as the accused enjoyed political patronage whereas our department was pressurized to file a diluted case or be ready to face consequences," said a police official in know of the matter, pleading anonymity.
The accused workers including a former Sarpanch, who as per police happen to enjoy patronage of the local politician continue to move around freely. The victim and her family, on the other hand, are living under constant fear and trauma.
The victim, who works as a nurse in the Health department, is being victimized. "She hasn't received salary for last one year," complained her husband. Official sources said they have directives from the concerned ministry not to release salary of the "rebellious woman, who dared to raise voice against the henchmen."
As if this all was not enough, the victim's husband has been getting threat calls to "withdraw the case or face dire consequences."
"Our life is doomed. We fear threat to life while no one is ready to listen to us," the victim's husband said.
On the other hand, victim's daughter who had just started college at Sunderbani degree college is unable to attend her classes as goons would follow her to the college.
"She was being constantly followed by goons who would follow her and pass lewd remarks since the day her mother dared to raise voice against attempt to rape. So my daughter had to stop going to college," said the poor family head. The locals who stand by the family said it was "Gunda Raaj in Jammu."
The SHO Rajouri police station, however, downplayed the matter, saying a case has been registered and that investigations take time.
Meanwhile, the poor family has appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi to look into the matter.
