Administration complacent against probable strike by Pakistan | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 4: With war hysteria between India and Pakistan climaxing with each passing day, there is little preparedness for any such eventuality at the level of administration and the citizenry in Jammu, which may cost dearly, in case of any misadventure from across the border. The repeated incidents of ceasefire violation and desperation on part of the terror outfits to strike back following decisive strikes by Indian Commandos have raised the probability of a war between India and Pakistan as the public sentiment with India is of outrage after Uri attack in which over 20 jawan were martyred. However, barring eviction of the resident s of border villages to safer places, it is business as usual in Jammu, which speaks of complacency on part of the administration as well as the citizenry. With forces at highest alert and the country completely exhausted of its patience, a small provocation by Pak can trigger at least a limited face off between hostile neighbours; but Jammu city, which is within the striking distance of Pakistani missiles seems little prepared to face any such situation. "This is the responsibility of civil defense and Home guards to prepare citizens for disasters like war to effectively meet any eventuality, but even at this point in time, when there is every possibility of outbreak of war, no initiatives are being taken by the Auxiliary wing of the Police to make citizens aware of Dos and Don'ts to effectively meet such an eventuality" said a retired senior police officer. "The Government of India has already cautioned the state government to make all preparations to meet any situation like war, but the local administration seems to be in state of complacency" he added. The administration has got the villages along the IB in Jammu and Samba districts vacated and the schools in the border areas closed to accommodate them, but sources add that these displaced villagers are facing lot of hardships in make shift camps and their live stock, which constitutes essential part of their living is completely unattended. There is anguish amongst the displaced people who were promised five marla plots in safer areas so that they could shift conveniently in such situations, but years later, the assurances proved to be mere empty recurring. The PHCs, Sub District and District hospitals have been asked to keep themselves abreast for any eventuality in the backdrop of current situation, but insiders believe, the preparations are far too short of the minimum requisites. "The leaves of all doctors and para medical staff are cancelled in such situations and disaster wards are set up to take bulk of injured, but most peripheral hospitals are in the same pathetic state and there is no sign of any preparedness" said a journalist, who went around these health units to assess their situation. |
