Malik, Mirwaiz, ors sulk; want to stay away | Hardliners project Geelani as the only leader | | Kashmir Unrest
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 13: The associates of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani have been assigned the job by their handlers to sideline the other separatists and project him (Geelani) as the only leader in Kashmir. Sources told Early Times that move has irked the Hurriyat dove, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and so-called JKLF Chief Yasin Malik and they are trying to maintain distance from Geelani. Insiders revealed that hardliners like Mian Abdul Qayoom, Mohammad Yusuf Naqash and others are projecting Geelani as a "big leader" and are asking the others to work under his leadership. "The so-called meeting of the stakeholders which was held at Geelani's residence last week could have led to the shutdown being called off but Mian Qayoom, who gave the opening speech, made it clear to one and all that no one should oppose the ongoing strike and everyone should repose faith in Geelani's leadership," sources added. On Sunday Yusuf Naqash issued a press statement stating: "The need of the hour is to rally around the leadership headed by Syed Ali Geelani and provide it full support. Everyone should and follow the programs under the leadership of Syed Ali Geelani." "All the schools of thought including, religious, social, trade union organizations, employees 'unions and civil society must observe the programs given by the joint leadership under the command of Syed Ali Geelani in letter and spirit," he said. Sources said that Geelani being projected as the leader has not gone well with even second rung separatists, including Shabir Shah, Bilal Gani Lone, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Nayeem Khan and others. "They too are maintaining distance from Geelani and his men and are giving a notion that they are against the weekly protest calendars being issued by the Geelani camp," sources added. They said the only binding force among the separatists is money and their handlers sitting across the Line of Control. These handlers had asked Geelani and others to join hands if they want to receive their stipend and salaries on time. "Yasin Malik was assigned the job to bring all the separatists on one stage and he succeeded in it. He (Malik) too is sulking as he was unaware about the fact that he would be asked to work under Geelani and he would have to acknowledge Geelani as his leader," they added. A Kashmir watcher said, "The fight among the separatists for supremacy is an open secret. Everyone knows that separatists have only one aim that they should be acknowledged as leaders by the people sitting across the Line of Control (LoC)." He said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapping off the Rs 500/ and Rs 1000/ currency notes has sent alarm bells ringing in the separatist camp as the money which Pakistan had pumped into Kashmir to fuel unrest has turned into mere pieces of paper and separatists now would way to look for ways and means to sustain their funding from across the border." |
