Poonch, Nov 24: As there was a brief lull after high Indo-Pak border skirmishes, the people living at close vicinity of Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar, Balakote and other forward areas of Poonch prayed for peace along the dividing line so that people living on either side of line have a peaceful life instead of life full of miseries due to cross border firing and shelling.
Wishing for permanent ceasefire between the two confronting neighbours, the locals in Villages along LoC recalled that some years ago border guns were silent along the LoC due to ceasefire agreement agreed between India and Pakistan in November 2003. "The ceasefire agreement infact has brought a reason to smile for the people in border township of Mendhar, who earlier had suffered a lot due to hostilities between the two countries," they added.
Recalling the recent miseries in recent border tensions, people recalled that number of locals lost their lives due to shelling while huge loss to property too was reported.
"Hundreds of animals also perished due to shelling and heavy firing in villages scattered along the LoC in Mendhar and its adjoining areas viz. Balakote, Mankote, Mendhar and even the bordering Poonch town.
They maintained that after the ceasefire agreement 2003, the fear among border dwellers got reduced which once again has raised its heads in the wake of increased tensions between India and Pakistan in recent past. "We (border people) here in routine pray that the war mongering to just wane away and ceasefire turns to a permanent feature along dividing line, said one among the border villagers.
The residents also said that people used to rush home after 5 pm before 2003 and this the markets remain crowded till late in the evening till 2013 the year which witnessed continuous ceasefire violations followed in 2014, 2015 and now in 2016.
"Four years ago, there was constant fear in the minds of people here that they will get killed in heavy shelling. But after ceasefire agreement between the two countries has ushered a new era of peace along the LoC but it again got disrupted, lamented Javid Ahmed Dharana of Mendhar
"We used to pray that the two neighbouring nations fight jointly to eradicate terrorism, he said, further hoping that the present turmoil shall end soon and to see a permanent ceasefire along IB and Loc.
