11/24/2016 11:52:24 PM

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 25: In a major setback to the state government, one of its globally acclaimed figures and Chief Minister's, Advisor, Prof Amitabh Mattoo is leaving for Australia on Friday as government's last-minute efforts to persuade him take back his resignation failed.
Highly placed sources in the Civil Secretariat said Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti this morning at 10:00 AM personally had a meeting with Prof Mattoo, in a bid to persuade him not to leave her government.
"But the persuasion failed to make any impact as talks had nothing tangible to offer something, which could heal his bruised sentiments," said a senior official privy to the meeting, which lasted for some 15 minutes.
The official, however, said Prof Amitabh was "very cordial" during his meeting with Chief Minister and showed no signs of having been offended. "He concluded his talks saying goodbye with a smile on his face," the official said. Prof Mattoo straight rushed to Jammu airport to catch next flight to New Delhi.
Prof Amitabh had resigned on Wednesday following some alleged misbehavior by an IAS officer while the government didn't initiate any action against the latter, something which hinted at a "fixed match". The meeting, as per sources pertained to rehabilitation of affected people of Kashmir.
Soon after the meeting, Prof Mattoo had called on Chief Minister. While no one knows what transpired in the meeting, moments later he tendered his resignation.
A noted figure in the field of academics and international relations, Prof Mattoo is scheduled to fly back to Australia on November 25.
Meanwhile, a senior official in the Chief Minister's Secretariat told Early Times that the IAS official accused of misbehavior with Prof Mattoo has tendered his apology before Mehbooba Mufti. "He has apologized before the Chief Minister formally," the official said.
Sources said Matoo had a tiff with a senior PDP leader, who incidentally was not only trusted lieutenant of the late Mufti Sayeed but is also close aide of the CM Mehbooba Mufti.
" Late Mufti Sayeed had different style of working but his weakness -and some his strength also- was that he could be easily enamored by the lofty ideas. Some people used it as pretense to get their ways with him. And, no one could question Mufti Sayeed. It's for this reason that Matoo was his advisor, even not being a party member. Mehbooba Mufti is in a different person altogether. She talks straight , is grounded and accepts loyalty to the party much before anything else. She defends her trusted lieutenants to the hilt especially those who had stood with her through turbulent times. Some, how Matoo could not fit in the matrix of Mehbooba Mufti and decided to part ways," said a senior cabinet minister.
The sources said that Matoo had tiff with the senior minister from the day one of the formation of the coalition government and there were whispers in the corridor of the power that he was eyeing the minister berth of that minister.
The CM was in knowledge of these development but decided not to shake up the things and allow things to settle down, though she publicly reposed confidence in her trusted cabinet minister only.
"There are also reports that Matoo was interested in many other things than the post assigned to him. It didn't go well with the CM and both developed discomfort so Matoo had to part ways. Though, there are also reports that he has fallen with the Modi government too and it's the reason that he had shifted base t o the Australia, where most probably he will go back again," said the minister.
