GMCH workers demand wages, get retrenchment notice | | | Bijay Charak Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 25: When more than one hundred contractual workers of Government Medical College & Hospital, Jammu, demanded wages, the administration gave them retrenchment notice. The workers were disengaged by the hospital administration and yet not paid pending wages despite a lapse of three months. One of the workers said the administration disengaged 107 workers when they demanded their pending wages of last 30 months. "It has been done on the instruction of the head of the institution. He had written a letter to the minister concerned, and after getting nod he retrenchment us from the job and directed security personal not to allow us inside GMCH and its associated hospitals", the workers said. Last month, the workers met Health Minister Bali Bhagat and demanded their pending wages and regularization. "But instead of listening to us, the minister said we were not the workers of department", said another worker. He said when they were engaged, the hospital authorities compelled and them to work round the clock. But at the end of each month, the officials said the workers of PDD and PHE are without salary for more than 2-3 years and that they shouldn't worry. A worker said, "My daughter is studying in a government school. Though the school expenditure is modest, she is taking tuitions. Some days back, she asked for tuition fee, but it was impossible for me to arrange the money. I felt very ashamed in front of my daughter. I fail to meet my family's genuine demands." "Our politicians seem least bothered about the families of contractual and need base employees like us," he said. GMCH Jammu's principal Dr Zahid Geelani didn't respond to phone calls from Early Times for his comment. |
