Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 3: While thousands of water supply schemes were taken up for execution over the years, around 4000 of them has not been completed thus forcing people to consume water from the contaminated sources. Official sources told Early Times that during the past one decade, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has taken up thousands of water supply schemes for execution in the state. Ironically, authorities have failed to complete majority of these schemes. Further, the Centre has listed 2500 water supply schemes in the state that have reported no physical progress despite timely and huge funds disbursement from Union ministry for drinking water and sanitation last year. As many as 2511 water supply schemes that were established under Centre Government's National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) have reported no physical progress during the last fiscal in the state thus deepening the water crisis in these notified areas. As per the data, the Kashmir division has 934 water supply schemes while Jammu division has 1566 schemes that have remained nonfunctional due to no physical progress over its construction. With 173, Baramulla has the highest number of water supply schemes in Kashmir that are yet to be made functional. Similarly north Kashmir's Kupwara and Bandipora district has as many as 109 and 89 under construction water supply schemes respectively. In south Kashmir, Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam 156 ,90 and 101 water supply schemes that have reported no physical progress during last year. As per ministry for drinking water and sanitation, the Srinagar district has 98 while as Budgam and Ganderbal has 111 and 73 defunct water supply schemes. In Jammu division, with 294 Jammu district has the highest number of under progressed water supply schemes. Rajouri has 168 while as other districts including Poonch, Kishtwar, Kathua, Samba has 89, 99 and 72 defunct water supply schemes. In Leh and Kargil, almost 149 water supply schemes have no reported physical progress during last fiscal. If sources are to be believed the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has taken up thousands of water supply schemes for execution in the state during the past one decade. However majority of these schemes are non-functional either due to the lack of funds or due to some other technical reasons. They say the worst affected of non-completion of these schemes are people from far-flung areas of Handwara, Uri, Kulgam and Gurez. "In some areas, water is being supplied through water tanks while in some areas people fetch water from streams and rivers without being filtered," sources said. |
