Is attitude of PM Modi changing towards Jammu and the state? | Six bold decisions | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 22: Is the attitude of the Narendra Modi Government hanging towards the people of Jammu province as well as the State of Jammu & Kashmir as a whole? The answer seems to be in the affirmative. From May this year onwards, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took six major and bold decisions which no one had expected that he would considering the negative or hostile attitude of all of his predecessors, Vajpayee included. These six decisions include (1) opening of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and (2) setting up of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Jammu, (3) sanctioning of Rs 2000 crore package for the Hindu and Sikh refugees from Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir, (4) decision to issue Domicile and Schedule Caste Certificates to Hindu and Sikh Refugees from Pakistan and reservation for them in Central services, (5) the BJP's full-scale opposition to the suggestion that 25 per cent posts in the Jammu & Kashmir Police Department be reserved for the local SPs and SSPs, coupled with the stand that it will not allow the state government to bring KPS at par with IPS and (6) the stand of the Union Government in the Supreme Court that led to a historic judgement on December 16, 2016. The judgement said that Jammu & Kashmir Constitution is subordinate to the Indian Constitution, that Jammu & Kashmir is not a separate entity and that the people of Jammu & Kashmir are not a separate block. The Judgement has rattled the Kashmiri leaders. That the Narendra Modi Government did what it did after May 2016 does suggest that the attitude of this Government towards Jammu and the state as a whole has undergone some change and that many in the nationalist camp have started expressing the view that the days of Article 370 are only numbered. The Kashmiri leaders have also expressed this view. They have said that what the Modi Government did during the past six months or so are steps in the direction of repealing Article 370. What is more significant is the fact that the Government of Mehbooba Mufti is working in tandem with the Union Government notwithstanding its repercussions in the Valley, the PDP's core constituency. All in all, it can be said that things are changing slowly but surely and it augurs well for the people of the state and the country as a whole. |
