Karra likely to contest Srinagar seat on Congress ticket | Parleys conclude in New Delhi | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 22: PDP rebel and former Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar Tariq Karra will contest the forthcoming Parliamentary election in Srinagar on Congress ticket after his parleys with National Conference yielded no results. Reports inform that after bidding adieu to the ruling PDP of which Karra was the founding member, he entered into talks with National Conference over his candidature for Srinagar's parliamentary seat. The seat fell vacant after his resignation and is scheduled to go for polls most likely in April next year. However, talks between Karra and National Conference didn't yield any results due to opposition from some NC leaders. "There were several voices that opposed Karra's induction. They were of the opinion that Srinagar already is NC's bastion and would continue to remain its stronghold. The leaders stated that if by-polls for Srinagar's parliamentary seat were held, they could bank upon prevailing anti-incumbency to campaign," sources within NC divulged. Meanwhile, Congress is all set to receive Karra with open arms with party believing that he could become its mascot in the summer capital. Congress hadn't been able to open its accounts from Srinagar since long in both assembly as well as the parliamentary polls. Sources informed that Karra held several closed door meetings with the Congress in the national capital and top Congress leaders including former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Furthermore, if sources are to be believed, Karra could even be elevated to the post of state Congress chief in near future- A post that once was with the PDP founder and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Sources informed that Srinagar and Anantnag could go to polls together in April next year as the seat fell vacant after Mehbooba Mufti assumed the office of Chief Minister. "Congress will field two strong candidates. If Karra contests from Srinagar, we may field PCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir as the Congress candidate from Anantnag seat," a Congress leader told Early Times while pleading for anonymity. He added that though there was no official communication from the party high command, but Karra could be party's face in Jammu and Kashmir. "As Karra had successfully contested the parliament elections in 2014, we are sure that he will be able to turn the tables around again," the party leader said. Karra had earlier hinted that he had begun his preparations and would hold consultations with his workers over his next move. Karra however could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. |
