SRINAGAR, Mar 17: With the recovery of body of a foreign militant the death toll in the Balhama-Khonmoh encounter in the outskirts of summer capital that ended on Thursday night reached three.
Reports said that the body of a foreign militant identified as Abu Hamas was recovered from the debris of one of the buildings today in the afternoon. With the recovery of the body of Hamas the death toll of militants in the encounter reached three. A jawan of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was injured in the firing incident.
It would be in place to mention here that bodies of two local militants were recovered from the debris of a gutted house on Thursday night. The two local militants were identified as Rasiq Nabi Bhat of Tral and Shabir Ahmad Dar of Awantipora. As per police records they had joined militancy in March and August 2017 respectively.
A police spokesman said that the police started a sanitization operation in which the area was to be cleared of any unexploded shells / mines after the encounter ended at Balhama-Khonmoh. In this process the teams of police and other security forces including bomb disposal squad were put for job.
"While concluding the search and sanitation of the operation site, police recovered body of the third militant (identified as Hamas, foreign militant). Pertinently the area was sealed to carry out further searches on cooling of rubbles immediately after the encounter ended to ensure no damage is caused by any explosive material left over at the encounter site. In this connection police has already registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation is on," said the police spokesman.
In the meantime, the police have arrested six persons involved in the attack on police constable Kultar Singh deployed at the shrine in Charar-I-Sharief in February this year. The constable sustained injuries in the incident and later on passed away at the hospital.
"On February 25, 2018, a group of militants fired upon SgCT Kultar Singh of JKAP 13th BN who was guarding Charar-I-Sharief Shrine wherein he got severely injured and later succumbed to his injuries. Militants snatched his rifle and fled away from the spot. In this regard, a case FIR number 06/2018 was registered in Police Station Charar-I-Sharief under section 120-B, 302, 392 RPC, 7/27 of Arms Act, 16, 18, 20 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act," said police spokesman.
The police spokesman said that the investigation so far revealed that one Umar Farooq resident of Pulwama along with five other accomplices namely Shahid Ahmad, Shahid Khurshid, Imran Feroz, all residents of Pulwama and Mudasir Ahmad Wani and Towheed Rather residents of Pampore, hatched a criminal conspiracy to snatch the weapon from the police constable.
"To give effect to the conspiracy they had a reccee of the area and the said sentry post at Charar-i-Sharief shrine earlier. Police has seized the vehicle used for commissioning of offence by the group of militants.
Investigation has revealed the clinching evidences against all the accused regarding their entering into conspiracy and commission of offence. All the accused persons other than Shahid Ahmad are arrested in the case. Shahid has joined the JeM outfit and is at large," said the spokesman.
