'Poor' JK Police make villagers sit on wet grass

Early Times Report
jammu, Mar 17: Even as the police department wanted to show its humility by releasing picture of a senior cop sitting on ground at his office lawns with villagers in south Kashmir for an interaction, the police-public meeting has brought "humiliation" for the department for pretending to be "poverty-stricken."
On March 16, the police department released a formal picture of SSP Anantnag holding a meeting with the villagers with all the participants sitting in the wet lawns amid intermittent rains.
The police also released the picture on its social media accounts showing how the officer was sitting "with humility among the people."
"Senior Superintendent of Police Anantnag Altaf Ahmad Khan chaired a counselling session in the Lawns of DPO Anantnag and addressed the problems of people of Sagam Kokernag," a police handout said.
"The counselling session was aimed at creating an understanding and building confidence among youth and parents, so that ways and means are found to prevent any law and order conflicting environment. Many inhabitants/parents of stone pelters and respectable citizens of the area joined the session," the handout added.
But the picture drew widespread public criticism with people saying why couldn't the police department afford to shell out a few hundred rupees to hold the meeting properly indoors with refreshment when the department has huge funds dedicated for the cause.
The invitees, on the other hand, complained that their clothes got spoiled. "Amid rainy spell we were made to sit on the wet ground. Forget our clothes, when SSP Sahib got up, his own trousers looked wet and muddy from behind," the invitees told Early Times.
As police released the picture on Twitter, many netizens tagged Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Director General of Police SP Vaid to retweets asking "why is police pretending to be suffering from poverty."
Sources said the government has taken a serious note of the development and that explanation was being sought. "See the point is that huge money, including secret funds, running into millions are dedicated for such causes in Kashmir. So why didn't the officer spend some money on civilians," said an officer, on the condition of anonymity.
The Anantnag police however downplayed the matter. "Actually SSP wanted meeting should give a down to earth impression so he decided to sit on the wet earth," said an official.
The police said the public response was positive. "The participants were given patient hearing by SSP Anantnag and their point of view was listened and appreciated. The participants thanked SSP Anantnag for his great gesture and response and the patient hearing," the police handout said.
The SSP wasn't available for comments.
