Early Times Report

Jammu, June 7: Even as the police booked Choudhary Lal Singh's younger brother Choudhary Rajinder Singh for using abusive language against the Chief Minister, sexual violence against women has not shown any decline especially in Jammu region.
Government data released last month revealed that 2850 cases of abduction of women and 5399 cases of molestation were reported during the preceding year. It further said that 1157 cases of eve teasing were also registered in various police stations across the state during the same period.
The state commission for women has its own data. According to its chairperson, Nayeema Mahjoor, there has been a drastic rise in crimes against women.
The figures, according to social experts are quite disturbing. It reflects the failure of the police to arrest the problem, they said.
However, the police seems more than interested in Rajinder's case, most probably to impress the Chief Minister, a political activist preferring anonymity told Early Times. While condemning the use of abusive language against the Chief Minister, he said hundreds of videos are posted on various Whatssap groups in Kashmir abusing and cursing the Chief Minister. "No action has been taken against anybody till date," he informed adding the videos, some of them morphed, fall within the ambit of `outraging the modesty' of a woman, the crime for which Rajinder has been booked.
