36 yrs on, irrigation canal in Udhampur yet to be completed | | | Arun Jasrotia Early Times Report
Udhampur, June 7: Work on Tagan Kul irrigation canal in this district started way back in 1982. Thirty six years later, the work is yet to be completed. The canal was supposed to be spread from Jullera to Tagan villages and its proposed length was 6.40 km. An amount of Rs 120 lakh has been spent so far on the canal construction, as per an RTI reply. Dhuni Chand, an farmer of Tagan, made a passionate appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to the woes of the farmers of Tagan village. He said their farm lands have dried up in the absence of an irrigation canal. "Every month, Prime Minister Modi, in his Maan Ke Baat, talks about the farmers' welfare and pledges that he wants to double the income of farmers. I request the Prime Minister to order a probe into the construction of Tagan Kul. It's a major scam," Chand said. He said due to scorching heat and non-availability of water in the Kul the farmers are the worst suffers. The area is non-irrigated and totally dependent upon rainfall. When the work on the Kul began, the villagers had pinned hopes that their problems would be vanish once and for all. "But even after more than three decades, we are still waiting for completion of the canal construction. It appears to be a distant dream now," another villager said. Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Ravinder Kumar while talking to Early Times said that he talked to the Irrigation department's top officials and asked them to give a report on the Kul construction. He said it is a "very old scheme which was not completed in time." |
