Medication errors led to death of patient in GMC&H: Social activist
6/26/2018 10:40:34 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 26: RTI activist Balvinder Singh along with Neelam Billawria and Kiran Billawaria have alleged that due to administration of wrong drug, Harnam Singh had died at GMC.
Neelam and Kiran both daughters of the deceased, alleged that they had taken their father namely Th. Harnam Singh son of Th. Abhey Singh admitted in the causality ward of GMC&H unit IV on 3/6/2018 early in the morning vide MRD No. MRD/OPDNo.892993, with the complaint of Jerky movements of the body without frothing from the mouth (convulsion/Scizuers).
Soon the doctors started treating the patient he showed fast recovery. In the meanwhile, on 04.06.2018 at 8.00 PM, nurse on duty, after seeing the prescription written by doctors on the admission register of the patient, gave us the slip bearing the name of two different injections (1) Acivir (two injections) & (2). Hepamerz (four injections). Then I, Neelam (daughter of the patient), went to the Sanyog Chemist Shop situated within the premises of GMC&H and showed the slip to the salesman present there in the shop. The employee gave us two injections of Acivir and four injections of Aldopam instead of four injections of Hepamerz, they alleged.
We gave all the medicines to the nurse who was on duty, then she without verifying or checking the prescriptions written by the doctor on the admission register of the patient, start administering two Aldopam injections mixed with NS to the patient, at 10.00 PM and it continued for at least twenty minutes, they claimed.
In the meantime our real brother and Sister in Law came there to meet the father and to know about his health at 10.20 PM. As both of them are medical practitioners in Himachal Pardesh and when they saw a slip pasted on the bottle of NS bearing the name of injection Aldopam they immediately raised an alarm and stopped the flow of NS bottle immediately and called the staff and doctor and asked how they are giving Aldopam injections to the patient, as this injection is used as an antidote that battles poisioning caused by organophosphate, mostly found in pesticides, and has nothing to do with any sickness/ailment of my father, they further said.
Soon after the administering of the said injection my father started rapid breathing and his position remained unchanged uptill 01.30 PM next day on 05.06.2018 and then doctors asked that he is not well put him on ventilator which we refused to do so because it gives the patient more pain while putting pipe upto his lungs through neck. Then finally we decided to take the patient to home and as we were shifting him to home he breathed his last in the way at around 02.10 PM on 05.06.2018.
Ultimately the administration of the said injection to a fragile and frail patient of 89 years proved a cause of his death. It is evident from the side effects of the injection Aldopam shown along with the uses of the medicines online those are : Nausea, Muscle weakness, drowsiness, double vision, blurred vision, increased blood pressure, hyperventilation, increased heart rate etc, they claimed, while addressing media persons.
All those present there said that soon they will approach the Court to get the direction for Principal & Superintendent Govt. Medical College & Hospital for the constitution of board of experts to investigate the matter and fix responsibility of negligence and punish the guilty so that no one in future dares to do such act of negligence while dealing with the human lives.
