Sham detentions, arrests will not do
Tackling separatism in Valley

Early Times Report

JAMMU, June 26: Mehbooba Mufti-led "unholy" alliance government is out. Governor rule has been in place since June 19. Army and para-military forces have resumed their anti-insurgency operations. The operations have been successful. A list of 22 most-wanted terrorists is also out. There are reasons to believe that the army and para-militaries will liquidate them sooner than later.
However, the fundamental question to be asked is: Will all this end the menace of terrorism and separatism in Kashmir? The answer is not in the affirmative. All this will not end the scourge of terrorism and separatism in the Valley, which was once called the Paradise on Earth. The reason is that the ring leaders have not been reined in; they are free and they continue to indulge in subversive activities. Yes, they are at regular intervals detained or put under house arrest - a drama that has been enacted since decades now. All these are sham arrests, detentions and house arrests.
The case in point is the oft-repeated news that Geelani and Mirwaiz are put under house arrest and Yasin Malik has been detained and the very next days, again the news comes that they have been put under house arrest and detained. What kind of house arrests these are? What kind of detention this is? All these three are the main ring leaders and all these three on a daily basis spit venom on India and instigate people of Kashmir to observe bandh, take the law of the land into their own hands and attack the Indian state and its symbols. They are seditionists and they are Pakistan's spokespersons in Kashmir. They need to be treated as such and tried under the relevant laws that require stringent and moral producing results. This drama must end now. These three so-called "resistance" leaders must be brought to justice. They must not be allowed to do what have been doing with impunity to hit the Indian state since years now. They should be treated like China treats the Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang province or Israel treats Palestinians. No leniency. Only hard pursuit that protects the state at whatever cost. The cardinal principle of the statecraft is: Strengthen and cultivate those who respect the institution of the state and bring the anti-state elements to justice so that no one dares to challenge and attack the institution of the state.
The Election Commission of India also has to act as per the Representation of People's Act and in terms of the laws as embodied in the Indian Constitution. It cannot and must not allow the political parties to go beyond what lays embodied in the Constitution. It cannot allow the political parties in Kashmir to enjoy power and sit on the Opposition Benches after taking the oath in the name of the Constitution and subvert the Constitution at the same time by raking up Pakistan, autonomy and self-rule and attack the institution of the army in the legislature and outside. The so-called mainstream parties are more responsible for creating an ugly situation in the Valley than the Geelanis, the Mirwaizs and Maliks. The fact of the matter is that it has become difficult to differentiate between the "mainstream" and separatist leaders.
Enough is enough. Enough of damage has been done. Now is the ime to retrieve the situation and the situation can be retrieved in Kashmir like it happened in Punjab and Jamu & Kashmir during the time of Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, otherwise called "Mni Bawa".
