Early Times Report

Jammu, June 27: The broken fencing wall, dried water bodies, bushes in some areas are enough to narrate the pathetic condition of lone golf course Sidhra, Jammu which looks like an abandoned desert area. It is enough to expose the discriminatory attitude of the authorities concerned towards development of prominent places in Jammu.
Wishing anonymity, an employee working at Sidhra golf course said that the party (BJP) during its rule had claimed that the golf course would be developed at par with international standard, but ground realties narrate something else. The fencing wall of the golf course got damaged three years ago, but till date the authority has failed to repair it.
"Local resident adjoining the golf course unauthorizedly enter in it through the damaged wall. At present more than 600 golfers have been registered and most of them are VIPs.
For their security there is no proper arrangement at place which could easily be trespassed by entering of locals", sources said, adding that through this way not only locals but the cattle also enters into the golf course.
Sources further said that to attract golfers, the authority had set up many fountains which however ran for only few months and after that they are lying defunct and the authorities are not in mood to repair them. The authorities had created small canals where rain water would be preserved and utilized for irrigation during summer. Last year, some engineers deputed here rejected the proposal of their predecessors and created a canal through which all rain water was diverted into river Tawi due to which all water bodies of the golf course have dried up. So, the greenery of golf course is dependent on bore wells.
"Few years back, the department of fisheries dropped a variety of fish seed into the water bodies of the golf course for attracting golfers. But now the level of water in these water bodies is very low, forcing the department to shift the fish to other places", sources said.
Also, a practice range was created in the backyard of current practice range and instead of developing them the authority had constructed another. Lakhs of rupees spent on old practice range were wasted and now the places are full of bushes. Every year the authority plants hundreds of saplings at that place but in absence of water these have dried up.
Sources further said that the high-end sports like golf have the potential to generate foreign exchange for the state but the Jammu golf course is not in position to generate economy of locals.
