'Withdraw amnesty to stone-pelters for restoring peace in J&K' | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 27: The Narendra Modi government's decision to withdraw support to militant-friendly PDP-led coalition government and bring the state under the direct rule of the Governor was right decision given the nature of prevailing state of affairs in Kashmir. Indeed, the situation was grave with the government appeasing the terrorists and secessionists. The imposition of the Governor's rule under Section 92 of the J&K Constitution was the only option left. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi rejected CM Mehbooba Mufti's demand seeking an extension of unilateral ceasefire for at least two more months and the army and para-military forces resumed anti-terror operations on June 17, a day after the end of a month's long mind-boggling ceasefire. The Ramzan ceasefire ended on June 16 midnight. The PM took this decision overruling Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was reportedly in favour of the then Chief Minister's suggestion that ceasefire be extended. One report even suggested that the Prime Minister "snubbed" the Home Minister. The imposition of Governor's rule in the restive state is a right step but it's not just enough. The withdrawal of ceasefire and imposition of the Governor's rule should have been followed by withdrawal of amnesty to 12,000 stone-pelters (over ground workers of terror outfits), who after the amnesty played havoc with Kashmir and stoned the para-military forces umpteen times. The withdrawal of amnesty to stone-pelters would have sent a right message across the Valley that the Government of India meant a serious business and that the days of kid-glove treatment to anti-state forces had gone. It bears recalling that the Mehbooba Mufti-led government had granted amnesty to almost 1000 stone-throwers in November 2017 at the behest of Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Notwithstanding the fact that the situation in Kashmir worsened after the grant of amnesty, Home Minister Rajnath Singh again surprised the nation on June 7, when he declared in Srinagar that more stone-pelters would be granted amnesty. And amnesty was granted. According to former CM Mehbooba Mufti, the total number of stone-pelters who were granted amnesty rose to 12000. With 12000 stone-pelters roaming freely in Kashmir, you can't expect peace to return to the Valley. If the Union Government sincerely wishes to restore order in Kashmir, it has to withdraw amnesty granted to them, as also invoke all the provisions which empower the concerned authorities to dear with seditionists or anti-state elements in an effective manner. |
