Kashmir centric parties set to become irrelevant? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 16: Governor's administration has announced the schedule for the forthcoming local body polls despite Kashmir centric parties deciding to boycott the process. Sources told Early Times that National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party had got it conveyed to the Centre that it should defer the polls to give them a chance to field the proxy candidates. They said that PDP and NC have realized that their tactic to "blackmail" New Delhi has not worked as the schedule has been announced. "PDP and NC know it very well that they cannot stay away from the process fully and there is every possibility about them asking their workers to contest the forthcoming municipal and panchayat polls as independent candidates," sources added. An analyst said that both the parties have developed the habit of depending on New Delhi to make them rule Jammu and Kashmir. "Now the times have changed. Centre wants mainstream parties in Kashmir to fight for their survival. They cannot depend on New Delhi forever," he added. "New Delhi is in no mood to patronize the Kashmir centric parties which talk about separatism and Kashmir being an issue. These parties despite enjoying all privileges have failed to prove their nationalistic credentials," he added. A Kashmir watcher said, "If NC and PDP don't fall in the line these parties could become irrelevant and the new political parties would emerge on the scene. The focus of New Delhi is on bringing new faces into the mainstream politics." He said, "NC and PDP have realized that Centre has decided to tighten noose around the mainstream politicians, who despite being the representatives of New Delhi, leave no chance unturned to project the cause of the separatists and go out of way to appease the people sitting across the Line of Control." "Now New Delhi's policy has changed. It won't tolerate any liabilities and the people who want to be in mainstream have to remain loyal to the country. You cannot talk in one language in Kashmir and in another language in New Delhi," he added. A politician said that Centre has set the ball rolling by remaining firm on its stand to go ahead with the ULB and municipal polls. "New Delhi's decision has put the PDP and NC in a tight spot. They know that if they keep on talking about Pakistan, separatism and Kashmir these parties would become a history," he said, "These parties should forget that they would ever get a chance to rig the elections again as India has moved beyond all these tactics." |
