SRINAGAR, Sep 28: Authorities have sounded a high alert across Central Kashmir and South Kashmir after a Special Police Officer (SPO) decamped with at least seven assault rifles and a pistol from the residence of a legislator from an uptown area on Friday night. Official sources said that SPO Adil Bashir Sheikh son of Bashir Ahmad ran away with seven AK-47 rifles and a pistol from the residence of Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Aijaz Ahmad Mir at Jawahar Nagar in the summer capital of the state. Aijaz represents the Wachi constituency of Shopian district falling in the restive South Kashmir. Aijaz is the first time legislator from Wachi constituency and is considered to be one of the youth icons of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the party to which he belongs to. He held some of the important positions in the youth wing of the party and is being looked upon as a future leader of the party. "SPO Adil Bashir decamped with seven AK-47 rifles and a pistol from the residence of MLA Wachi. A manhunt has been launched to nab the SPO and recover the rifles and pistol taken away by him. In the meantime, a high alert has been sounded in Central and South Kashmir," said official sources. Official sources said that high alert has been sounded in Srinagar and Budgam districts as well as South Kashmir. All the roads leading to the different districts of the Kashmir valley are being monitored and supervised in order to ensure that the SPO is nabbed at the earliest and the arms are recovered from him. The Jammu & Kashmir police announced that two lakh rupees would be given to the person who arrests the SPO and hands over the arms to the force. It remains to be seen that how far the offer would attract the people to track down the SPO and hand him over to the police.
