21 lakh people in JK still wander without Adhaar cards | Will Governor pull up administrative machinery? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 28: There are no less than 21 lakh people in the state of Jammu and Kashmir who haven't yet been issued the Adhaar cards and these non- affluent ones continue to be denied the basic facilities in the state. As per the official documents in possession of the Early Times, at present, no less than 21 lakh and 96 thousand people in the state of Jammu and Kashmir have their Adhaar cards pending with the government and they are facing immense hardships to avail the facilities of ration, banking and several others. Though the government has been tightlipped over the reason why such a huge chunk of state's population is yet without an Adhaar card, the people, particularly in the country side have been left in lurch. Amongst those who suffer due to the lack of Adhaar are the people who have been getting the remuneration from the government as a monthly stipend. Pertinently, a monthly pension of Rs 1000 is provided to the poor elderly persons, widows, women in distress and physically challenged persons under these schemes. In J&K 573383 beneficiaries are presently receiving pension under these social security schemes including 150883 under NSAP and 422500 under ISSS amounting to Rs 686.36 crore per annum. There are many who want to avail scholarships but cannot do that due to the unavailability of an Adhaar card. There are also those who want to get their passports approved but same cannot be done until and unless they are in possession of an Adhaar card. The subscribers have been receiving frequent SMS alerts and tele-calls from mobile operators and their field associates, asking them to link their numbers with Aadhaar. Substantiating their claims the Telecom companies were citing a directive issued from the Department of Telecom to re-verify all existing connections with Aadhaar by February 6, 2018. As per a senior official of the state dispensation, there are mere 237 Adhaar enrolment centres established across the state and keeping in view the huge rush of the people, these centres often create a mess leaving several details erroneous and rectifiable. "The problem is not in the cities. It is in the far off villages wherein people have to travel to several kilometers and apply for Adhaar. Also, they don't have the proper information available about the details of the documents needed for the purpose and therefore end up moving from pilar to the post," the official said. He added that several have been facing the hardships in availing the ration from the government depots as same needs Adhaar number now for availing the ration card. |
