Guv’s advisor irked over unscientific waste disposal in Chadoora | Ganai promises scientific waste management facility | | Early Times Report
Budgam, Oct 9: After several years of wait, Chadoora town in central Kashmir's Budgam district might get a scientific waste management facility very soon. This was announced by Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, advisor to J&K Governor, during a public durbar held at Budgam on Tuesday. Ganai met with several delegations during the public durbar. He felt very sad after coming to know about the sad state of affairs vis-a-vis solid waste management in Chadoora town. Ganai assured that very soon the facility for door to door collection of garbage plus its treatment on scientific lines would be initiated in the town. He directed Deputy Commissioner Budgam and SDM Chadoora to prepare a project report for making this a reality. As reported already by Early Times, 300 lavatories and household sewerage from hundreds of houses and business units enters into the waters of Doodh Ganga from filtration plant Kralpora to Branwar village in Budgam which is spread at a stretch of 23 kms. The Department of Public Health Engineering (PHE) is supplying same water to almost 9 lakh population in Srinagar which is leading to several health disorders. Hundreds of lavatories and household liquid waste continues to enter into Doodh Ganga at Kralpora, Wathoora, Chadoora and other villages of Budgam and same water is lifted at Kralpora water filtration plant from last 40 years. The situation is alarming as chlorination or sedimentation process is not making water safe for drinking purpose. With an of supplying safe drinking water to Srinagar uptown, J&K Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) is laying water pipeline from higher reaches of Doodh Ganga at village Nowhaar in Chadoora to Kralpora water treatment plant. Now water from Doodh Ganga will be lifted at Nowhaar which is 18 kms up Kralpora. PHE officials say that by end of this year, 12 million gallons of fresh water will be lifted at Nowhaar every day and out of it 10 MG/day will be supplied to Kralpora plant. Sources say that Nowhaar is not the last village located on the banks of Doodh Ganga. There are more than half a dozen habitations like Bonyaar, Pethyaar, Surasyaar, Check Surasyaar, Brenwar etc where from water comes down to newly established mega water supply scheme at Nowhaar. Population in these habitations will increase in the coming years. Right now lot of faecal matter, solid and liquid waste continues to enter Doodh Ganga around these habitations especially in rainy season. Immediate attention of authorities is sought on following points: "Government in order to ensure supply of safe drinking water to Srinagar, Chadoora and adjoining areas must declare these villages Open Defecation Free (ODF) and small Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) must be established in all these villages/habitations so that not even 5% of the liquid waste enters into Doodh Ganga. Scientific solid and liquid waste management programme must be put in place in Chadoora town and adjoining villages as well. Research on side effects of excessive use of Chlorine during water purification must be conducted. No more water be lifted from Doodh Ganga at Kralpora after commissioning of Nowhaar water supply scheme," said Dr Abid Hussain, a public health expert. |
