Voters repose faith in candidates, ignore party affiliations | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 9: The huge voter turnout in the Phase-I of Urban Local Bodies elections in Jammu has suggested that this time people have reposed faith in the candidates rather than the political parties which they belong to. Sources told Early Times that trends in the first phase of elections reveal that independent candidates have an edge over the candidates of political parties. "Voters this time have given preference, importance to the credentials of the candidates rather than going by the parties. For instance there are some wards in Jammu Municipal Corporation where independent candidates are said to have done well to get votes in their favor including Ward No. 15: Partap Garh Mohalla, Ward No 11: Mohalla Malhotrian, Ward No 2: Jullaka Mohalla, Ward No 3: Mast Garh etc.," they informed. They said that the mood of the voters has given sleepless night to the Bhartiya Janta Party, which traditionally has stronghold in main Jammu city, where independents have showed dominance by garnering public support in their favour. They further said that the newly created wards in outskirt of the city have also been showing tilt towards independent candidates. "Overlooking the aspirations of the common people, the mainstream parties didn't give mandate to the deserving candidates, which prompted some workers to field themselves as independents," they said. Although the major political parties of the State including National Conference, People Democratic Party are not participating in ULB election, yet BJP is facing tough competition from the independent candidates as these candidates have projected various development issues which BJP failed to deliver as per their manifesto. |
