Heavy turnout in ULB polls: Frustrated NC puts question on impartiality of Governor's office | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 9: Frustrated over response of the people during first phase of elections of the civic bodies, National Conference (NC) leadership has intensified attack on Governor Satya Pal Malik for not succumbing to the 'black-mail' politics of the Kashmir based party. NC as well as PDP was expecting that their boycott would badly effect turnout in the civic body polls and people will not cast votes. But, barring some areas of South Kashmir, there is no impact of boycott call on the poll. While as North Kashmir registered good response of the people, other parts of the Kashmir also received sober response from voters. Even in the strongholds of NC namely Poonch and Rajouri districts registered all time high voting and this turn out has frustrated the party. Fearing that in the on-going civic bodies elections party is going to lose its ground in Srinagar city and new face would be Mayor of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, NC leadership has stepped up attack on Governor. Today NC leaders issued hard-hitting statement against Governor and put question mark on the impartiality of the Governor's office. In a joint statement issued today, NC leaders said the ongoing election process is a smokescreen to hide the machinations of the governor's office to throttle the democratic institutions in the state. The statement read that the party isn't against any person becoming the mayor but the way governor has unequivocally expressed his intentions, while talking to a private news channel, by hinting towards a particular individual before-hand for mayor's post of Srinagar is what casts a shadow on the whole election process already mired in controversies and the rules of engagement as per the established norms. |
