Party holds emergency meet a day after Ist phase of elections | PDP likely to reverse its poll boycott decision | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 9: The poll boycott seems to have backfired for the PDP which now is contemplating to rectify the mistake it committed by boycotting the civic polls. What has really caught the eye of political analysts, is the fact a day after the first phase of Urban Local bodies elections were held in different parts of the state, the PDP called an emergency meeting of senior leaders, legislators and other functionaries. The meeting that was chaired by the party's vice president Abdul Rahman Veeri witnessed participation of almost all senior leaders of the camp. Though the spokesman of the party tried to downplay the main theme of the meet, stating in a party handout that the meeting discussed present political scenario of the state, he didn't divulge any further. Meanwhile, there are reports coming to fore that meeting discussed whether the party missed the bus by calling for a boycott of the polls and stayed away from the exercise. There are even reports that the party is contemplating whether it should rethink over the decision to taking part in the poll process and reverse the decision it made over boycotting the polls earlier. The leaders present in the meeting even told their seniors that the NC has been fielding its prey candidates in the fray and that it is the party alone that has left behind. Last week, one of the senior party leaders within the PDP subtly hinted that the party leadership committed a mistake by not taking part in the polls. "As the unpopular local body polls proceed with state power on display, a sinister design to change the character of legislature is unfolding. BJP and state machinery are brazenly managing to enact the hoax of election and get BJP nominees through and later grab all the six seats reserved for urban local bodies and Panchayats in state's legislative council. Once that happens BJP-managed majority in the house will become legislatively capable to defeat all and any law that doesn't suit RSS agenda. Seemingly the way for this is clear as BJP and New Delhi brazenly defile democratic institutions by way of giving control to its surrogates, unfortunately, PDP-NC boycott is not proving enough to foil the BJP game plan," the leader was quoted as having said in a statement. Meanwhile, Tuesday's meeting has been a point of focus for many and there are chances that the party may reconsider its decision and jump into the fray to secure its vote bank. "There are apprehensions that we may get robbed of our committed vote bank as it may drift away from us and join the opposite camp. The need is to consolidate the vote bank and make enough measures to keep the flock intact and alive," says a party functionary. He added that though it is the prerogative of the party's senior leadership to decide whether we should participate in the polls or not but majority of the party men are of the opinion that we should re-think over the decision that we have made in the past. |
